Cathy's father was a Trinidadian
barrister and her mother an Englishsocial worker . Her family moved to Liverpool when she was about 2 years old. At 17, she joined theEveryman Theatre . In 1984 she entered the RSC. Her film debut was as Simone, the elegant black prostitute in "Mona Lisa" (1986). She has also worked in television, including a lead role in theITV series "Band of Gold".Present roles
In 2007 Cathy joined the long-running
BBC One school drama "Grange Hill ", as deputy headmistress Miss Gayle.It was revealed in May 2007 that Tyson would be joining the cast of popular
ITV soap opera "Emmerdale ". She plays feisty single motherAndrea Hayworth , who immediately takes a shine to single dad Terry Woods.On November 17th 2007 Cathy hosted a charity event for The Sick Children's Trust.
On December 16th 2007, Cathy played the part of King Herod in the
BBC Three adaption of Liverpool Nativity.On 1st November 2008 Cathy Tyson has agreed to reprise her roll of celebrity compere for The Sick Children's Trust's charity weekend. The event being held at the Haven Golden Sands site is a big crowd puller. The event is being organised by Friends of Eckersley House.

Cathy was married to
Craig Charles from 1984 until their divorce in 1989. They had one child, Jack, born in May 1988. She then married Andrew Shreeves.She resides in
