USS Waxbill (AMc-15) was built in
1936 as the wooden-hulled purse seinerLeslie J. Fulton by F. L. Fulton,Antioch, California ; Purchased by theU.S. Navy ,19 November 1940 for eventual conversion to a Coastal Minesweeper; Commissioned as USS AMc-15,26 November 1940 ; Named Waxbill27 November 1940 ; Decommissioned,20 January 1941 and enteredGeneral Engineering and Drydock Co.,Alameda, California , for conversion to a Coastal Minesweeper; Recommissioned and placed in service,19 February 1941 .World War II Pacific Ocean Operations
Not yet fully equipped or manned, USS Waxbill operated in the
12th Naval District 's waters, training naval reservists through the end of1940 . Attached to the inshore patrol forces of the district as of1 January 1941 , USS Waxbill entered theGeneral Engineering and Drydock Co. yard atAlameda, California , on20 January , for conversion to a coastal minesweeper (AMc). While at Alameda, the ship was decommissioned and simultaneously placed in service on19 February 1941 . USS Waxbill operated locally in the12th Naval District attached, successively, to Patrol Force, Local Defense Forces and the Mine Force for the district until she was assigned to theWestern Sea Frontier Force in August1942 .Decommissioning
Reassigned to local defense forces of the district on
12 March 1943 , she was eventually taken out of service on12 September 1944 and was struck from theNavy list on14 October 1944 . Transferred to theMaritime Commission 'sWar Shipping Administration on6 January 1945 , the erstwhile minecraft was simultaneously sold to her original owner, F. L. Pulton.References
