The first USS "McCall" (DD-28) was a Sclass|Paulding|destroyer in the
United States Navy duringWorld War I and later in theUnited States Coast Guard , designated CG-14. She was named forEdward McCall ."McCall" was laid down
8 June 1909 by theNew York Shipbuilding Company ,Camden, New Jersey ; launched4 June 1910 ; sponsored by Miss Jessie Willits; and commissioned23 January 1911 , Lieutenant CommanderJ. T. Tomkins in command.Attached to the
Torpedo Flotilla , Atlantic Fleet, "McCall" operated along the Atlantic coast, principally out ofNewport, Rhode Island , and in theChesapeake Bay area. Each winter found her with the fleet inCuba n waters for maneuvers.In 1916 "McCall" made neutrality patrols off
New York and along theNew England coast. On14 June 1917 , following overhaul atPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania , she steamed to New York to escort a troop convoy toEurope . The torpedo boat destroyer continued to perform escort duties in the western Atlantic until January 1918 when she sailed forQueenstown, Ireland . Arriving there22 February , she provided escort and rescue services until16 December .Upon return to the United States in January 1919 she resumed east coast operations until decommissioning at Philadelphia
12 December 1919 .In reserve for the next four and a half years, she was transferred to the
United States Coast Guard 7 June 1924 . Stationed atNew London, Connecticut , she was part of theRum Patrol .She was returned to the Navy
18 October 1930 and was scrapped and sold2 May 1934 , in accordance with the terms of the London Treaty for Naval Disarmament.ee also
