- Sheokhand
Sheokhand (श्योखंड) or Shivakhande (शिवाखंडे) Shaukhanda (शौखंडा) or Shokeen (शोकीन) is a gotra of Jats found in India. Shokeen is an Arabicised shorter version of Sheokhand. The gotra gets its name from
Shiva [Hukum Singh Panwar(Pauria):The Jats - Their Origin, Antiquity & Migrations, Rohtak, 1993. ISBN 81-85235-22-8, p. 38] . Literally it means the abode of Shiva.History
The family records of this gotra can be found with pundits in Gadhganga. According to Hukum Singh Panwar(Pauria), it may, however, be interesting to note that this tribe, living in about 25 contiguous villages [Hukum Singh Panwar(Pauria):The Jats - Their Origin, Antiquity & Migrations, Rohtak, 1993. ISBN 81-85235-22-8, p. 38] in
Jind district ofHaryana and about 5 villages in Nangloi block of Delhi , goes by its gotra name asShivakhande orSheokhand . Of late this gotra has been Arabicised asShokeen in Delhi villages. Yet the elders ofSheokhand Khap area take pride in the fact that they originally hail from the Dharans, whose kingdom was rather misnomered as "Gupta empire " in Indian history. Be that as it may, one thing is plausible about the Jats of Sheokhande clan. They must be theSivas who fought against theBharatas on theJamuna River in one of the tenRigvedic wars [Hukum Singh Panwar(Pauria):The Jats - Their Origin, Antiquity & Migrations, Rohtak, 1993. ISBN 81-85235-22-8, p. 38] . They are identified by scholars with theShivi s [Kathasaritsagar, vol.1 p. 11] or theSibi s of theUsinara country in the north of Haridwar near the source of Ganges. [ABORI, vol. XXIX, p. 117, fn. 9] The Sivas or Sibis became known as Shivakhande or Sheokhande from and after theShivalik s, the abode of Lord Shiva, the highest deity of the Jats. Their descent from theShivalik hills has provided good grounds to the author of Devasamhita to expound the theory ofOrigin of Jats from Shiva's Locks . [Hukum Singh Panwar(Pauria):The Jats - Their Origin, Antiquity & Migrations, Rohtak, 1993. ISBN 81-85235-22-8, p. 38]There are 8 villages (Ath-Gama) of this Gotra in
National Territory of Delhi (Sultanpur Majra ,Mongol Pur Kalan ,Mongolpur Khurd ,Peeragarhi ,Nangloi Jat ,Nilothi ,Kamroodin-nagar ,Dichaon Kalan ),Roshanpura, Deendarpur, Chhawla and inHaryana nearJind . All the village of SHOKEEN gotra in delhi falls in outer delhi. Though these village use SHOKEEN as their surnames but socially they introduce themselves as SHOKHANDA, particularly for fixing marriages and in panchayats.Notable persons from this clan
