Detroit, Michigan on18 March 1947 . He studied for the priesthood atSacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome before being ordained a priest onJuly 27 1974 . He earned aLicentiate andDoctorate in SacredTheology from the Pontifical Institute of Saint Alphonsus in Rome in Moral Theology.John Nienstedt was named an
Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit byPope John Paul II on12 June 1996 . He was consecrated byAdam Cardinal Maida , Archbishop of Detroit, on9 July 1996 . On June 12, 2001 Pope John Paul II named Bishop Nienstedt the bishop of New Ulm, Minnesota where he was installed as its third bishop on August 6, 2001.Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Nienstedt ascoadjutor archbishop for the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis on24 April 2007 . He received the "pallium " on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul,29 June 2008. Upon Archbishop Flynn's retirement on May 2, 2008, Nienstedt automatically succeeded him as Archbishop.
