WAHR was originally founded in 1959 by Arnold Hornbuckle and business partner Bill "Buckshot" Lane. As such, it was one of the area's first FM radio stations. The call letters stood for 'With Arnold Hornbuckle's Records'cite web |url=http://nelson.oldradio.com/origins.call-list.html |title=Call Letter Origins |work=The Broadcast Archive |last=Nelson |first=Bob |date=2008-02-02] , as at the time of licensing Arnold Hornbuckle owned Hornbuckle's Record Shop, also in Huntsville, Alabama. After over 40 years serving the
Tennessee Valley , the two finally retired, selling the station in July1999 . WAHR is currently the flagship of a three-station group that includesWRTT-FM andWLOR .Awards
In November 2007, WAHR won the
American Cancer Society 's Mid-South Division award for best radio supporter for 2006-07. The station was cited for having "strongly supported" the ACS's Relay for Life, gala, golf tournament and other events sponsored by the national and local cancer organizations.
