Jason Roks

Jason Roks

Jason Roks is recognized across North America for his networking and media distribution acumen, and for his ingenuity in predicting and leveraging new directions on the Internet and other communications technologies. He has been featured in Wired, Time, Macleans, Saturday Night, Yahoo! Internet Life, Shift, Macworld and Silicon Alley Reporter for his insights on new media economies, digital music and video, p2p file sharing and networking, online communities, piracy, copyright and intellectual property. He has also presented his ideas at numerous conferences, including the International New Media Festival, Digital Coast Reporter, MB5 New Media Visionaries, Macworld Expo, and iWorld.

While the digital fringe community celebrates Jason as a founder of the infamous and now decade-old file-sharing software pioneer, Hotline Communications, Jason's career has roots in design and creative direction, and in product development, testing and marketing for the entertainment, technology and advertising industries. Jason studied philosophy and business at the University of Western Ontario and is a multiple award-winning software and new media developer.

As a consultant to various software and media companies, Jason provides expertise in digital media distribution, content management systems, adaptive business modeling, rights management, online guerrilla marketing and emerging technologies. His projects have included a p2p content distribution model; media casting models; terminal and network computing solutions; community and organizational knowledge management systems; and broadband and wireless infrastructures.

As Emerging Technology and Digital Distribution Analyst to the CBC, Jason played a key role in identifying and developing a cost effective national bandwidth infrastructure; launching its VoD services; and developing ZED Ambient Television. Recently, Jason produced the New Media Business Alliance's 2006 iSummit. Roks continues to advise the Canadian Film Centre/Habitat technical advisory council and is also a founding volunteer of wirelesstoronto.ca. He is currently researching and developing metaphors for visualization of meta data and social networks and is the Chief Technology Officer for the Independent World Television News: The Real News -- a non-profit converged news media organization.
