Irish Museum and Cultural Center

The Irish Museum and Cultural Center is the newest addition to the active Irish American community in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. It is a non-profit organization which uses volunteer help. It opened in its current location in Union Station on March 17, 2007, (Saint Patrick's Day.) The museum hosts a number of events, programs, classes, and exhibits. The center's mission encourages knowledge and appreciation of the Irish and Irish-American community, culture, history, and heritage in the greater Kansas City area and region.

Events

The center hosts many cultural events such as:

* Classes and programs on Irish, Irish American, and Celtic topics including culture, arts, music, Irish dance, literature, history and heritage
* Monthly Irish Music jam sessions, on 3rd Sundays (check website or call center to confirm)
* School of Irish Music classes, including tin whistle (also called the tinwhistle, whistle, pennywhistle, or Irish whistle)
* Irish language classes
* Numerous lectures are given on topics of Irish origin such as The Book of Kells, poet Seamus Heaney, and freedom fighter Michael Collins.
*Irish Whiskey tastings have been known to take place at the Center.

The center also hosts Irish social events, including an annual Irish Gala and Irish Trivia Night during the Irish Season and Irish-American Heritage Month.

* An exhibit about Irish American Presidents during February, 2008
* An exhibit about Nelly Don including historic costume collection during summer, 2007
* Exhibits about the Kansas City Irish Community
* The Heart and History of the Bodhrán
* Irish history and heritage library materials and information
* limited, but growing Ireland travel information & resources
* Genealogy resource room and library (including Irish diaspora, family names, family coats of arms, and online genealogy resources)

The book, "The Kingdom of Ireland", published in 1691, a Bible over 200 years old, antique Irish musical instruments & song sheets, and Irish Civil War artifacts & memorabilia are included among items on display.

An 1831 Jaunting car is located in the main room.

A small collection of Belleek Pottery can be found in the conference room.

Other

Books, cd's, and other items of Irish interest are sold in a small gift shop on site.

The center can be rented for private events.
