Eli M. Noam (born
August 22 ,1946 inJerusalem ) is a professor of Finance and Economics at theColumbia Business School . He has written over 400 articles and has authored, edited, and co-edited about 25books . Noam is married toNadine Strossen , the National President ofACLU .Education
Noam attended
Harvard University, where he obtained several degrees, including an A.B. 1970 (Phi Beta Kappa , Summa Cum Laude thesis), an A.M. 1972, a J.D. 1975 and a Ph.D. inEconomics 1975. His dissertation advisor wasMartin Feldstein .Military Service
Noam served in the
Israel Air Force during theSix-Day War in 1967 and the October War in 1973. He also served with theCivil Air Patrol as a 1st Lt., Mission Pilot for Search and Rescue with New York Wing and Phoenix Squadron.Career
Noam began working at Columbia Business School in 1976. He has split his time at the school with a brief stint as
Commissioner of the New York StatePublic Service Commission . He has also taught atColumbia Law School , thePrinceton University Economics Department, theWoodrow Wilson School (1975-1976), and theUniversity of St. Gallen inSwitzerland (1998-2000). Noam returned to the business school in 1990 where he now serves as theManaging director of theColumbia Institute for Tele-Information (CITI), aresearch center at the school. CITI is auniversity -based research center focusing onstrategy ,management , andpolicy issues intelecommunications ,computing , and electronicmass media . In addition to leading CITI's research activities, Noam worked on theMBA concentration in the Management of Media, Communications, and Information at the Business School and the Virtual Institute of Information, an independent,web -basedresearch facility. Noam has written approximately 400 articles on subjects such ascommunication s,information ,public choice ,public finance , and generalregulation . 1Select publications
