Nicholson began his career as a trainee with Sheffield Wednesday, turning professional in August 1998. His first team debut came on
August 28 ,2000 when he replacedAndy Hinchcliffe as a first-half substitute in Wednesday's 1-1 draw at home to Blackburn Rovers.
