Liptov is an informal designation of region in
Slovakia m part of the former Kingdom of Hungary, Liptó county. __NOTOC__Geography
The territory largely corresponds to the
Ružomberok District andLiptovský Mikuláš District in northern Slovakia. Three villages (Liptovská Teplička ,Štrba andŠtrbské Pleso ) are now in thePoprad District . The riverVáh flows through the middle of the region. The region is bounded by numerous mountain ranges, for exampleVeľká Fatra in the west,Tatra mountains in the north andLow Tatra in the south.Capitals
The capitals of the region were the Liptov Castle and the villages of Liptovská Mara and
Partizánska Ľupča since 1677 the capital wasLiptovský Mikuláš .History
The territory of the former county arose before the 15th century. In 1918, Liptov became part of Czechoslovakia. During
World War II , whenCzechoslovakia was split temporarily, Liptov was part of independentSlovakia . AfterWorld War II Liptov region was inCzechoslovakia again. In1993 ,Czechoslovakia was split and Liptov became part ofSlovakia . Nowadays, it is one of the 21 official Slovakia's tourism regions (excluding 3 villages in the Poprad District).ee also
