Adam Baylin is a fictional character from the ABC Family series Kyle XY and is portrayed by J. Eddie Peck. Adam Baylin is both the creator of Kyle and his genetic father. Baylin possesses many superhuman abilitites granted to him by his increased brain function

Character's background

Origins

Born presumably in the late 1950s to early 1960s, Baylin was in a surrogate mother's womb for thirteen months; therefore, his brain had time to develop far beyond the human norm. The surrogate died soon thereafter from complications of his birth. Adam attended the University of Washington and dated Sarah, a woman of incredible intelligence and mental strength. The two would frequent JP's Restaurant by Route 12 in June 1982 and as a symbol of his love the young Baylin gave Sarah a one-of-a-kind Latnok Ring featuring a unique red stone. Sarah decided to test her limits and when she needed Adam the most, he was too frightened and abandoned her. Sarah's continued use of her abilities ended up killing her, and Adam always felt guilty for his actions. Extremely lonely, Baylin decided to found a company he always dreamed of to continue the experiments that had created him.

Zzyzx

After years of work, he eventually developed an artificial gestation chamber and he invented a fluid that would provide oxygen and nourish the embryo placed inside, therefore leaving no need for an umbilical cord, leaving the resulting child without a belly button. Baylin created Kyle XY and kept him gestating inside a carefully monitored gestation chamber for over sixteen years so his brain would develop far beyond the human norm. Baylin was shot in the heart and died in "The Prophet."

The Death of Adam Baylin

After Adam was forcibly removed from Zzyzx, he moved himself into isolation, using Brian Taylor as his link to the outside world and used Foss to spy on Zzyzx and watch over Kyle. When Foss finally made his move, Adam instructed Foss to watch over Kyle. After the incident at the carnival, Adam had Kyle brought in to work with him in his mansion. Adam began training Kyle in telekinesis, but Adam displayed weaknesses and illness. When Kyle accidentally left the connection on with the Tragers, Zzyzx tracked Adam, shooting him, subsequently leading to Adam's death. [The Prophet]

Adam's Return

When clues lead Kyle and Jessi to an abandoned cabin, they find Adam alive and in a coma in a secret room. [Leap of Faith] After Mada Corporation is taken down by Kyle, Stephen, and Jessi, Foss leaves to take care of Adam. [To C.I.R. with Love] After healing himself, Adam returns to Kyle, walking with a cane and limp. He resumes Kyle's training, with a focus on healing the body, and instructs Kyle to stay close to Jessi. [First Cut Is the Deepest] Realizing that he should have allowed Kyle to make the decision about Jessi he reveals the truth of his past with Sarah and his role in her death. After Kyle begins to suffer from a "power outage" Baylin discredits the notion that Kyle healed Andy and helps him discover a hidden message featuring a Red Latnok symbol and the words "I'm Alive." [Primary Colors] After discovering the way Latnok was ready to treat Jessi, he decided to take a break from the community. Now fully healed, he decides to leave and invites Kyle to join him despite already knowing his decision. Adam leaves, putting his faith in Latnok that they will not bother Kyle or watch him anymore, telling Kyle "You have your whole life to be extraordinary. Now's the time for you to be ordinary." and that Kyle deserves something Adam never had: the ability "to live." [I've Had the Time of My Life]

Personality

Having lived in isolation for so long, Adam appears to be very awkward to others, including a lack of manners. Nicole sensed a bad vibe from Adam during his visit in "Primary Colors" and he treated her quite rudely. Adam discredits Kyle's beilief that his powers were acting strange because he healed Andy. Adam also puts unearned faith in others, an extreme weakness. Baylin trusted Taylor for much of his life, but Taylor was not only a traitor to Baylin, but also created Jessi without the approval of Adam or Latnok. When Adam tells Latnok to leave Kyle be, Latnok betrays him, kidnapping Amanda at the end of the prom and leaving a Latnok ring for Kyle in her place.

Abilities

Kyle and Jessi can do much more than Adam or Sarah can due to being more developed, but Adam shares many abilities in common with Kyle. Adam can perform telekinesis by manipulating the polarity of water. He is also quite gifted at manipulating his own physiology to heal himself.

Trivia

*Adam Baylin was the person Foss had been in contact with through most of the first season and the first novel.
*Baylin and Sarah shared a specific table at JP's Restaurant carved with their initials and the Latnok symbol.
*Baylin and Sarah's song "She Could Be You" is the work of artist Shawn Hlookoff. Though the song is meant to be circa 1982, the real artist is only 23 years old.
