Local Baron

Local Baron ( _ro. Baron local) is a pejorative title given by the media to Romanian politicians or businessmen suspected of using their money to influence the local police and judicial system for personal gain.

One example of a local baron in Craiova is Adrian Mititelu [ [http://www.gardianul.ro/2008/03/16/special-c10/suporterii_craioveni_vor_sa_l_debarce_urgent_pe_adrian_mititelu_-s87747.html Gardianul Suporterii craioveni vor sa-l debarce urgent pe Adrian Mititelu! ] ] , the owner of the Universitatea football club as well and other local businesses including an obscure newspaper called "Ediţie specială de Oltenia" [ [http://www.ratecard.ro/ziare/ziar/265 Ziare - Editie Speciala - Rate Card - Toata mass-media in acelasi loc ! ] ] . His friendship with the local police chief Gheorghe Bică is well-knownFact|date=June 2008 and many complaints against him have been formally dismissed as early as 1995Fact|date=June 2008.

Another mainstream example of a policeman turned local baron is Gheorghe Vlăsceanu who was arrested in June 2008 on charges of fraud, bribery and forming a criminal organization.
