Scene from Shakespeare's The Tempest

It is thought that Hogarth was hoping that more commissions for similar scenes would come flowing in after painting this scene, but unfortunately this did not happen, although the painting is a rich and vibrant example of the artist's work. The scene shows Caliban glowering behind Miranda, and on the left of the picture, her adoring Ferdinand, and father Prospero. Ariel is shown floating above the figures, playing the lute.
