:"This article is about the Neil Diamond song. For the Kenny Loggins track that's otherwise called simply "Heartlight", see
Welcome To Heartlight (song) .""Heartlight" is a song written by
Neil Diamond ,Carole Bayer Sager and her then-husbandBurt Bacharach [ [http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:gifixqe5ld6e~T1 All Music Guide] - A Biography of Neil Diamond] , and recorded by Diamond in 1982. It reached #5 on theBillboard Hot 100 charts, becoming his eighth Top 5 hit on the Hot 100 chart. The song also spent four weeks atop the adult contemporary chart in late 1982.The song is inspired by the blockbuster movie "
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial ". When E.T. (Extra-Terrestrial) leaves Earth, his heart glows a luminous red; hence the title of the song. The entire song is about an E.T. which came to Earth but unfortunately never made it on time to the spacecraft. The E.T. then spent time on Earth and made a new friend, persuading to help the E.T. return home. The lyrics of the song are based on the famous scenes in the movie. For example:
: "Don't wake me up too soon": "Gonna take a ride across the moon": "You and me"
is a strong reference to E.T and Elliot riding a bicycle across the moon, heading to the forest.
