John Gregory Huarte (born April 6, 1944 in Anaheim, California) is a former professional American football quarterback and the 1964 Heisman Trophy winner.

Early years

Huarte played for the University of Notre Dame after graduating from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California. During his sophomore and junior years at Notre Dame, John played for only a few minutes per game. As a senior, however, John became the starting quarterback as the Fighting Irish won all but one game during the 1964 season, in which he won the Heisman Trophy. By the end of the season, Huarte threw for 2,062 yards with only 205 passes, an amazing average of over 10 yards per pass attempt. Other notable players who were behind Huarte in the Heisman voting included Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus.

Professional career

Huarte was drafted in 1965 by the American Football League's New York Jets, and by the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League. He signed with the Jets, but was beaten out for the starting position by fellow-rookie Joe Namath, who had finished the 1964 season 11th ranked in the Heisman voting. Subsequently he did see action as a back-up quarterback for several other professional teams from 1966-1972. He played his final two seasons of professional football as the starting quarterback of the Memphis Southmen of the World Football League.

After football

Huarte is a member of The Pigskin Club Of Washington, D.C. National Intercollegiate All-American Football Players Honor Roll.

Huarte is also the CEO of Arizona Tile Supply, Inc. The company sells its wares through more than 20 branches in Arizona and California, as well as five other southwestern states.
