Little Portugal is an area in
South London , specificallyStockwell where there is a large Portuguese community.Many families first settled in the area during the 1960s and 1970s after fleeing the authoritarian regime of
António de Oliveira Salazar . Many worked in the catering and hospitality trade, with some women gaining a reputation as efficient and courteous domestic servants. Later, others, with their savings, started to open restaurants onSouth Lambeth Road .There are estimated to be some 27,000 Portuguese in this part of London - the largest community outside PortugalFact|date=June 2007, with around 40,000 Portuguese people living in London as a whole. The area is in fact the headquarters for
