The magnet is named after alumnus Daniel Pearl 81', a slain Wall Street Journal reporter.
The magnet is one of the best in the Los Angeles Unified School District, with many students continuing to a four year school. The Magnet Offers Courses in Journalism, Film Editing, Film Appreciation, Speech and Debate, and more. The magnet is responsible for two thirds of the schools multimedia outlets; the school newspaper The Birmingham Chronicles and What's Poppin. Both are award winning, and have excellent teachers(Caroline Hong Rhude and Kevin Kelly; respectively).
