Academic structure

In the 1980s the school was an unwieldy institution with poor performance, discipline and security. By 1994 this had been turned round by the then principal Dori Collazo-Baker with the establishment of three mini-schools. Each mini-school had its own speciality allowing parents to choose which suits their children best. Dierdre Flynn took over and remained Principal until 2005, when she retired and was replaced by Harry Sherman. The school now consists of four smaller learning communities: Renaissance, New World, ETK and Star.

The population of the school is diverse, with 45% Hispanic, 40% Black, 13% Asian and 2% White. Students are given the opportunity to participate in a vast array of extra-curricular activities. Recently the school scored an "A" on the New York City School Progress Report and a "Well Developed" on the School Quality Review. Enrollment now is about 700 students.
