Indian Harbor Yacht Club

Indian Harbor Yacht Club

The Indian Harbor Yacht Club is a U.S. boating organization, located in Greenwich, CT, with access to Long Island Sound. The club is based mainly around personally owned yachts and pleasure boats, but also has a long history of competitive races.

History

The Indian Harbor Yacht Club was founded as a racing yacht club in 1889 by Henry E. Doremus, E. S. Doremus, and Richard Outwater, sailors on the sloop "Sirene". The original meeting were held in the freight loft on the pier on the estuary known as Indian Harbor.

Shortly afterwards, politician William Marcy "Boss" Tweed invited the club to move into his adjacent Americus Club, a rowdy meeting hall catering to New York politicians. They later moved again to nearby Tweed Island.

The Club was formally organized in 1892, with Henry Doremus elected the first commodore.

In 1895, Commodore Elias Benedict (owner of the yacht "Oneida") bought and tore down the Indian Harbor Hotel and the Americus Club and built the much larger Mediterranean house, which still stands today. Shortly afterwards, Benedict terminated his lease with the club, and the organization was forced to move yet again to a rented house on Smith Cove, which still stands 150 yards north of the present clubhouse.
