GM U platform

GM U platform

The U platform is a generic name for General Motors' minivan platform.

1990

Released in the fall of 1989, the U platform debuted with the Pontiac Trans Sport, Chevrolet Lumina APV and Oldsmobile Silhouette. The utilized a galvanized steel space frame underneath dent resistant panels similar to those used in Saturn models and the Pontiac Fiero. All models used a 120-hp, 3.1L V6 mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. In 1992, the 3800 Series I V6 became available with a four speed automatic. Both were replaced by the LA1 3400 V6 in 1996. A notable option that debuted in 1994 was a power sliding door. This is a GM innovation that is now available on every minivan today.

1997

The second U-body (platform) minivans arrived, also known as the GMT200, in 1997. Cars that use this platform are the Chevrolet Venture, the Oldsmobile Silhouette, and the Pontiac Trans Sport and Pontiac Montana (which permanently dropped the Trans Sport name in 1999 and replaced it with Montana), as well as Opel/Vauxhall Sintra. The main target with their LA1 3.4 liter V6 engine as the only engine available was a Chrysler minivan equipped with the 3.3 liter V6.

2000

The platform now imported to China for manufacture as the Buick GL8 exclusively for Asian consumption.

2005

The U-body was updated once again (GMT-201) - GM refers to this generation of minivans as "Crossover Sport Vans" (CSV). The CSVs are: Buick Terraza, Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, and the Saturn Relay. All 4 minivans are built at GM's plant in Doraville, Georgia.

2007

The USPS has placed an order for 10,000 vans to be built at the Doraville plant. The vans are scheduled to be delivered by September 1st of 2007.

Future

Canada & Mexico will be the only countries that will still produce the Flagship Pontiac Montana SV6 and Chevrolet Uplander. Although THE US dealerships wont sell Uplanders for 2009
