The U platform is a generic name for General Motors'
minivan platform.1990
Released in the fall of
1989 , the U platform debuted with thePontiac Trans Sport ,Chevrolet Lumina APV andOldsmobile Silhouette . The utilized a galvanized steel space frame underneath dent resistant panels similar to those used inSaturn models and thePontiac Fiero . All models used a 120-hp, 3.1L V6 mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. In 1992, the3800 Series I V6 became available with a four speed automatic. Both were replaced by the LA1 3400 V6 in 1996. A notable option that debuted in 1994 was a power sliding door. This is a GM innovation that is now available on every minivan today.1997
The second U-body (platform) minivans arrived, also known as the GMT200, in
1997 . Cars that use this platform are theChevrolet Venture , theOldsmobile Silhouette , and thePontiac Trans Sport andPontiac Montana (which permanently dropped the Trans Sport name in 1999 and replaced it with Montana), as well as Opel/Vauxhall Sintra. The main target with their LA1 3.4 liter V6 engine as the only engine available was a Chrysler minivan equipped with the 3.3 liter V6.2000
The platform now imported to
China for manufacture as theBuick GL8 exclusively for Asian consumption.2005
The U-body was updated once again (GMT-201) - GM refers to this generation of minivans as "Crossover Sport Vans" (CSV). The CSVs are:
Buick Terraza ,Chevrolet Uplander , Pontiac Montana SV6, and theSaturn Relay . All 4 minivans are built at GM's plant inDoraville, Georgia .2007
The
USPS has placed an order for 10,000 vans to be built at the Doraville plant. The vans are scheduled to be delivered by September 1st of 2007.Future
Canada & Mexico will be the only countries that will still produce the Flagship Pontiac Montana SV6 and Chevrolet Uplander. Although THE US dealerships wont sell Uplanders for 2009
