William Schneider, Jr. is an American
politician who currently chairs theDefense Science Board .Schneider served as
Under-Secretary of State in theReagan administration , and later became a member of theProject for the New American Century (PNAC). He was one of the signers of theJanuary 26 ,1998 , [http://www.theindyvoice.com/pnac/ PNAC Letter] sent to PresidentBill Clinton that encouraged an attack againstIraq . In that same year he served on theCommission to Assess the Ballistic Missile Threat to the United States , which came to the conclusion that Iraq could develop a ballistic missile capable of striking the US in ten years.In January 2001, as
George W. Bush prepared to take office, Schneider served on a panel fornuclear weapons issues sponsored by theNational Institute for Public Policy , a conservativethink tank . Other members of the panel includedStephen Hadley ,Stephen Cambone , andRobert Joseph , who later were appointed to senior positions in the Bush Administration. This panel advocated usingtactical nuclear weapon s as a standard part of the United States defense arsenal.In
2001 he was appointed by the senate to theCommission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry .Schneider was selected by
Donald Rumsfeld to chair theDefense Science Board . In this position, Schneider continues to advocate using nuclear weapons in certain limited first-strike situations.External links
