Dhaka Shishu Hospital is a specialised hospital in Bangladesh for the treatment of sick children. The hospital is located in the capital city of Dhaka.
The hospital was established in 1972, right after independence, by the iniative of some philanthropic persons including late Prof. Tofayel Ahmed with the help of Bangladesh Government in collaboration with Save the Children Fund of UK and World Vision of Bangladesh.[1] The hospital is under the administration of a Management Board constituted by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Bangladesh, which provides 50% of total annual funding, the rest being raised through services on payment and donations and grants.Support of Dhaka Shishu Hospital Trust are utilized as and when necessary. The Trust was initially created by two public lotteries & donations.[2]
In 1999, the hospital had the following facilities:[1] Total hospital beds: 300.
- 212 non-paying beds,
- 88 paying beds( including 45 cabins )
- 94 doctors
- 136 nurses
- 21 paramedics
In that year, average occupancy rate was about 90%.[1] In 2011 the present bed capacity has been increased to 557.

DSH Overview Dhaka Shishu Hospital
Started functioning in this new premise from June 1977. The construction cost was supported by the government grant and DSH Trust Fund raised by donations, two public lotteries, and concerts. A committee formed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh supervised the construction. Among other, Late Prof. Tofayel Ahmed, the founder member secretary of the management board of DSH was a member of the construction committee. The first management board was formed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh by a government gazette notification in 1975 (vide: G.O.No.26-3/75-NBR-427dt.25/6/75& F.26-3/75-NBR/271dt.28.7.1977). Since then the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh has reconstituted management board from time to time. This autonomous hospital is a nonprofit service-oriented, full-fledged children hospital at the national level with a capacity of 535 beds. It has a team of highly qualified paediatric consultants and technical staff to cater the need of children. This hospital is dedicated to provide comprehensive health care to the sick children irrespective of their socioeconomic status. The hospital is the place for postgraduate training in Paediatrics and is recognised by the University of Dhaka, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University(BSMMU) and the Bangladesh Collage of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS).
The National Economic Council (NEC) of Bangladesh chaired by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the then Prime Minister of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh approved a scheme to construct a 250-bed children hospital expandable to 500 beds in December 1974. Subsequently in March 1975 with the approval of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh the site of the project was transferred to the present premise at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Shyamoli, Dhaka. Dhaka Shishu Hospital started functioning in the new premise from June 1977. BICH, the academic wing of Dhaka Shish Hospital was established in 1983 to conduct various paediatric postgraduate courses such as FCPS, MD, MS, DCH etc. The institute is affiliated with the University of Dhaka, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University(BSMMU) and the Bangladesh Collage of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS). Dhaka Shishu Hospital comprises five major divisions e.g. Paediatric Medicine, Paediatric Surgery,Paediatric Anaesthesia,Division of Diagnostic & Imaging and Paediatric Nursing. Paediatric Medicine consists of Paediatric Cardiology, Nephrology & Kidney Diseases, Paediatric Neuro-science(Neurology, Neuro-Developmental Disability, Pschycology & Mental Health), Neonatology( Neonatal & Perinatal Medicine), Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Haematology, Thalassemia & Oncology, Respiratory Paediatrics( Pulmonology), Endocrinology & Metabolic Disorders, Infectious Diseases and Community Paediatrics, Adolescent & General Paediatrics,Day Care,Observation & Emergency, Paediatric Rheomatology,Critical Care Paediatrics. Paediatric Surgery includes Neonatal Surgery, Urology, Burn & Reconstructive Surgery, Paediatric Neurosurgery, Minimal Invasive Surgery (Laparoscopy) and ENT Surgery. Diagnostic division includes Microbiology, Clinical Pathology, Biochemistry, Radiology & Imaging.
The intensive Care Unit (ICU) for children, the first of its kind in Bangladesh was established in this hospital in 1992. A well equipped Physiotherpy unit which is going to be a full fledged Department of Physical Medicine & Physiotherapy.
The OPD and the Emergency handle a 700- 800 of paediatric patients daily. The OPD includes Medicine, Surgery, ENT, Skin, Dentistry, EPI, CDC, Breast feeding counseling and various follow up clinics. Follow up clinics include Cardiology, Nephrology, Child Development Centre, Neonatology, Growth and Nutrition, TB and Endocrinology. The hospital has two special centres such as Thalassaemia Centre and CDC where patients are receiving specialized treatment. Five beds have been reserved in the Infectious Disease and Community Paediatrics Unit for emergency outbreak e.g. Diarrhoea, Dengue Fever and Swine Flu.
Since taking over charge the present management board decided to improve the quality of different services for which responsibilities for cleaning, pest control and security services have been strengthening . Centralized oxygen supply, computerized accounting system and automated patients admission system, centralized announcing system, audiovisual health education programme for attendants and parents at the OPD, audiovisual orientation for nursing staff have been introduced to improve existing services.
