Guzzoni joined the Italian Royal Army ("Regio Esercito Italiana") and fought in
World War I .After the
Second Italo-Abyssinian War , Guzzoni was appointed as Governor ofEritrea . He served as governor from 1936 to 1937.In 1939, Guzzoni had a prominent role in the
Italian invasion of Albania and wasCommander-in-Chief there in 1940.In June 1940, after Italy enterred
World War II , Guzzoni commanded the Italian 4th Army during the invasion of France.On
29 November 1940 , Guzzoni succeededUbaldo Soddu as Under-Secretary of War and Deputy Chief of the Supreme General Staff.In 1943, Guzzoni was General Officer Commanding the 6th Army on
Sicily and commander of the Axis troops on Sicily during the Allied invasion of the island.Army Group Liguria
Guzzoni completed the war as
Commander-in-Chief ofArmy Group Liguria . This was the Italo-German army ("Esercito Nazionale Repubblicano") of theItalian Social Republic ("Repubblica Sociale Italiana", or RSI). Formation of the RSI army started in 1943 after Italy quit the war and once Italian dictatorBenito Mussolini was rescued by the Germans. The RSI army was disbanded in 1945. Army Group Liguria included several German units and its Italian units were sometimes transferred to German formations.ee also
