Early life
Higgins was born in Cobh, County Cork. She has one brother and six sisters. One of her sisters, Lilly, appeared with Maeve at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2006. The two sisters appeared together in the 2009 television series Maeve Higgins's Fancy Vittles.[citation needed]
School
Higgins attended Walterstown National Primary School and Saint Aloysius' College, Carrigtwohill. She later studied photography in Colaiste Dhulaigh, Dublin, finishing her studies in 2004. After that she began doing stand-up comedy.
During an appearance on RTÉ 2fm's Countdown to 606 (which aired on 8 June 2007), she spoke of having completed her Leaving Certificate in 1998. In the Leaving Cert Memory Lane feature, she claimed she "still can't count her change" after doing Foundation Maths. She did Honours Irish, despite panicking on the day, and also liked English. She chose German over French, but wished she had done Spanish (which was not available in her school). She did Home Economics and, on the show, successfully answered one of the questions that had appeared on the 2007 examination paper that day. She said she had no idea she was going to be a comedian at the time. She advised students not to worry.[citation needed]
Personal life
Higgins is a close friend of fellow comedian, Josie Long, who appeared in several episodes of Maeve Higgins' Fancy Vittles.
Comedy
Higgins started her 'comedic' career in 2004, and has written and performed at many festivals and shows.
She began her comedy career on national radio station Today FM after auditioning on The Ray D'Arcy Show in February 2004. She failed to win.[2]
Maeve regularly performs and tours around Ireland and sometimes in the UK and Australia.
In 2005, Maeve took part in the hidden camera show Naked Camera' with fellow comedian and friend, PJ Gallagher, and landed her own television show, Maeve Higgins' Fancy Vittles, in 2009.
