The Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) is a U.S.-based human rights NGO that was created in 1981 with the intention of fighting for human rights in Guatemala. With offices in Oakland, CA and in Guatemala City, NISGUA works to coordinate local grassroots campaigns on both sides in the interest of improving the lives of those people who are oppressed in Guatemala. The Report on Guatemala (RoG) is NISGUA's quarterly publication that provides a voice on Guatemalan issues.
Guatemalan Accompaniment Project (G.A.P)
Accompaniment is a non-violent, peaceful tool used by human rights organizations across the world. In the case of NISGUA, accompaniment involves the placement of volunteers in communities that were directly affected by Guatemala's 36-year internal war, in order to discourage further human rights violations. Volunteers live and work side-by-side with victims of the violence, and especially with men and women who are pursuing legal action against former oppressors. Guatemala has a history of violence against human rights workers, which the accompaniers are supposed to help discourage.
