August 14 ,1815 -January 16 ,1890 ) was a U.S. Representative fromNew York .Born in
Schaghticoke, New York , Holmes moved with his parents toMorrisville, New York , in 1819.He attended the public schools and was graduated from Morrisville (New York) Academy.He taught school.He was engaged in civil engineering on the Chenango and Black River Canals for five years.He studied law.He was admitted to the bar in 1841 and commenced practice inMorrisville, New York . Loan commissioner for Madison County 1848-1851.He served as judge and surrogate for Madison County 1851-1864.Holmes was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress (
March 4 ,1865 -March 3 ,1867 ).He was not a candidate for renomination in 1866.He resumed the practice of law inMorrisville, New York , for a short time, and inUtica, New York , until 1872, when he moved toBay City, Michigan , continuing the practice of law.He died inBay City, Michigan ,January 16 ,1890 .He was interred in Cedar Street Cemetery,Morrisville, New York .ource
