Otisco, New York , Cowles attended the common schools, and was graduated from Hamilton College,Clinton, New York , in 1845.He taught school until 1853.He studied law.He was admitted to the bar in 1854 and commenced practice inClyde, New York .He served as judge of the Wayne County court fromJanuary 1 ,1864 , toOctober 30 ,1869 .Cowles was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress (
March 4 ,1869 -March 3 ,1871 ).He was not a candidate for renomination in 1870.He resumed the practice of law.He served as again judge of Wayne County court fromJanuary 1 ,1874 , toJanuary 1 ,1880 , and fromJanuary 1 ,1886 , until his death inClyde, New York ,January 20 ,1901 .He was interred in Maple Grove Cemetery.References
