May 31 ,1824 -June 29 ,1889 ) was a U.S. Representative fromNew York .Born in
Greenfield Hill, Connecticut , Wakeman completed preparatory studies and was graduated fromHerkimer Academy , New York.He studied law atLittle Falls, New York .He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in New York City in 1847.He served as member of the State assembly in 1850 and 1851.Wakeman was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-fourth Congress (
March 4 ,1855 -March 3 ,1857 ).He was an unsuccessful Republican candidate for reelection in 1856 to the Thirty-fifth Congress.He served as delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856. At the outbreak of the Civil War raised the Eighty-first Pennsylvania Volunteers. Postmaster of New York City fromMarch 21 ,1862 , toSeptember 18 ,1864 . Surveyor of the port of New York City.He resumed the practice of law.He died in New York CityJune 29 ,1889 .He was interred in Greenwood Cemetery,Brooklyn, New York .ource
