"The Times" can trace its history back to
1890 . However, the more recent version dates back to1958 ["Thomasville Times Is Produced in News Building," High Point Enterprise article, 1970] .In
1890 , J.F. Westmoreland – the brother of D.S. Westmoreland, founder of Thomasville's first chair factory – began publishing a weekly newspaper. The paper later merged with "The Chairtown News" to become "The News-Times". This paper was later absorbed by "The Tribune".In
1958 , "The Tribune" was purchased by "The High Point Enterprise" and became "The Thomasville Times". It became Thomasville's first daily newspaper. The first editor was Wint Capel. In
2004 , "The Times" and its parent company were purchased by Paxton Media following the death of Randall Terry. Immediately, long-time employees began to feel the pressure that they were no longer wanted or needed. Paxton never included the Times on its official list of newspapers, as if it had never existed. In the early fall of 2004, commercial print customers were given one day notice that their rates would skyrocket or they would have to find another printer. Nearly 20 employees in pre-press, press and distribution were given same-day notice that their jobs were being moved to High Point. They were given two weeks' severance for each year of employment. In
2005 , Paxton loyalist Sarah Smith, who had previously been production manager, was named general manager. Shortly thereafter, the Times became the first business in the community to bail on the community's history, removing the historic big chair from the top of the newspaper's front page. There was no truth to the rumor that the chair was replaced with Paxton's corporate logo, the dollar sign.In
2008 , "The Times" finally went out of business (thanks to mismanaged news coverage and a lack of resources) and was folded into the High Point Enterprise. A high-ranking Thomasville city official was said to have made the comment that while it was sad the newspaper was closing, they were glad to see it go because having no source of news was not nearly so bad as a source that did a poor job of reporting the news. Lisa Wall was the newspaper's final editor.External links
