Squat Theatre is a
theatre group who moved toNew York City in 1978.Squat Theatre was founded by
artist s,writer s,designer s,musician s inBudapest ,Hungary in the late 1960s. They were known asKassak Studio , and later, during their underground years in Budapest as "apartment theatre ". Members of the group were expelled from Hungary in the early 1970s for their radicalaesthetic al views. After spending a year and working inEurope they moved to theU.S. in 1977.Their
experimental theatre inNew York became a well-known place in the city on West 23rd Street, near theChelsea Hotel , between 7th and 8th Avenues. All three of their major plays: "Pig!Child!Fire ", "Andy Warhol's Last Love ", "Mr. Dead & Mrs Free " were staged in their storefront theatre, with the street as a backdrop and many times integral part of their plays.
