NTR plc (formerly an acronym for "National Toll Roads"), the international renewable energy group, builds and runs green energy and resource-sustaining businesses.

Founded in 1978 to develop and operate toll roads in Ireland, NTR has since diversified into broader infrastructural development by building on its entrepreneurial and project development experience. Between 2006 and 2009 in particular, NTR has focused its attention on responding to the growth opportunities provided by the macro factors of climate change, resource depletion and security of energy supply.

In 2008, NTR expanded its renewable energy interests considerably. NTR invested US$100m for a controlling interest in Stirling Energy Systems (SES).[1] Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, SES is a manufacturer of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) electricity generating equipment, and through its sister company, Tessera Solar, is a developer of utility scale solar powered generating projects in the US and internationally.[2]

NTR invested US$150m for a controlling interest in Wind Capital Group (WCG).[3] Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, WCG is a Wind Energy developer in the US Midwest and has experience in wind energy development. Also in 2008, NTR completed the merger of its US ethanol business, VBV, with Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: GPRE). Following the merger, NTR holds a 45% interest in GPRE, which is a NASDAQ listed ethanol producer.[4]

Within NTR's stable of sustainable waste management businesses are Greenstar Ireland .,[5] Greenstar North America .[6] and Celtic Anglian Water .[7]

NTR continues to hold interests in major infrastructural providers of roads through National Toll Roads and broadband through Imagine.

NTR is an Irish public limited company. Its shares are not listed on any stock exchange but can be traded on the grey market via the company's stockbrokers, Davy Stockbrokers, Goodbody and NCB Stockbrokers.

In August 2011 NTR announced record losses for a non financial Irish company of 381,000,000 euros in the year to March 31st 2011.[8]

The company which had a cash pile of 1.3bn Euros in 2008, reported net cash of less than 100 million euros.
