James Franklin Battin (
February 13 ,1925 -September 27 ,1996 ) was a Republican U.S. Representative from theU.S. state ofMontana .Born in
Wichita, Kansas , Battin moved with his parents to Montana in November 1929. He was educated in thepublic school s of Billings, the largest city in the state. Battin He graduated fromhigh school in 1942. He enlisted in theUnited States Navy and served for three years, two and a half years of which were in the Pacific theater of operations. He returned to his studies and graduated in 1948 from Eastern Montana College in Billings.Battin received the degree of
Juris Doctor fromGeorge Washington University School ofLaw ,Washington, D.C. , in 1951.He was admitted to the bar and practiced law inWashington, D.C. , for about a year. He returned to Billings in 1952 and continued in law.He served as deputy county attorney, secretary-counsel for the City-County Planning Board, assistant city attorney, and city attorney.He served as member of theMontana House of Representatives in 1958 and 1959.Battin was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-seventh and to the four succeeding Congresses, and served from
January 3 ,1961 , until his resignationFebruary 27 ,1969 , to become United States district judge for the District of Montana, an appointee ofU.S. President Richard M. Nixon . He became chief judge, District of Montana onNovember 16 ,1978 .References
