Ted Kirkpatrick (born 1960) is an American heavy metal drummer who is most well known for his work with the American Christian metal band Tourniquet.

Biography

Ted was born and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He began playing drums at the age of 12, and by 1990, had already briefly played in the band Trouble with Bruce Franklin before becoming the co-founder of Tourniquet. He is the band's primary songwriter, and occasionally plays guitar.

Influences and Drumming Theory

Ted names among his drumming influences, Simon Phillips, Carl Palmer, Dave Weckl, Terry Bozzio, Dean Castronovo, Akira Jimbo, and Buddy Rich. Among his non drumming influences to his drumming he lists classical works such as Scarlatti harpsichord sonatas and Bach's organ Fugues.

As a traveler to the jungles of Papua New Guinea, the Amazon Basin of Western Brazil, Malaysia, Taiwan, Ecuador, the Solomon Islands and other far off lands in search of butterflies and other insects, the fantastic and repetitive sounds of the jungle have influenced his drumming as well.

Ted has stated that his philosophy of drumming is to treat the drums as a musical instrument and not just a noisy timekeeper. He is well known for his ability to create and execute polyrhythms within the framework of songs and for his advanced double bass technique.
