Bobby Hathaway was a three-year all-conference player in high school at Carmichaels Area High in
Pennsylvania . He was also the Uniontown Herald-Standard offensive player of the year and was selected to thePittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 team. As a senior, he set school touchdown and scoring records as a fullback and linebacker. Hathaway enrolled at West Virginia in 2003 but, after not seeing varsity action, he was redshirted by head coach
Rich Rodriguez .In 2004, Hathaway saw more time on special teams. He totaled 21 tackles on the season, one being for a loss. Against East Carolina Hathaway had five tackles, followed by four tackles against Central Florida. He then had two tackles against
James Madison University .As a sophomore in 2005, Hathaway saw backup time at linebacker behind starter Jeff Noechel. While playing backup, Hathaway totaled 27 tackles for the season with 1.5 sacks. He also had a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and a pass break-up. He had eight tackles against Wofford, but then had an ankle sprin against East Carolina. He then bounced back with a six-yard sack and a fumble recovery against Cincinnati. He rounded out the season with four tackles against Pittsburgh and South Florida.
In 2006, Hathaway finally earned the starting role at linebacker. Playing alongside starter
Kevin "Boo" McLee and sophomoreReed Williams , Hathaway had a career-high 45 tackles along with 6.5 tackles for a loss. He also recorded his first interception of his career, which he returned for 29 yards againstMississippi State . He had seven tackles against University of Maryland to start the season, then five tackles in the Toyota Gator Bowl against Georgia Tech to end the season. Hathaway was an honorable mention for the third-team all-Big East team.Entering the 2007 season, Hathaway returned as the sam linebacker, but saw limited action. He recorded four tackles against Syracuse and three against
Mississippi State . In the 48-282008 Fiesta Bowl victory theOklahoma Sooners , Hathaway recorded a season-high 7 tackles. Hathaway finished his senior season with a career-low 20 tackles and was selected by theNational Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame's Hampshire Honor Society as a scholar-athlete.References
