Wayamba University is the thirteenth national university in
Sri Lanka . It was established in January1999 . The main purpose of the university is offering totally English medium Degree, Diploma and Certificate courses (both internal and external)on various areas such as Agriculture, Engineering, Management for students as well as professionals already engaged in various employments. The courses being offered are highly up-to-date and job-oriented.The university is located in two separate premises, each consists of two faculties. Makandura Premises is located next to the Industrial Zone and Low-country Fruit and Vegetable Research Center in Sri Lanka. Makandura refers to the huge mass of land of paddy fields of the area. This premises of the university houses two faculties, Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management and Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition.The library, Well-equipped computer unit and student accommodation facilities that are constantly being updated and upgraded ensure a sound environment for the students to pursue their studies.Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management is subdivided in to four departments; Department of Biotechnology, Department of Plantation Management, Department of Agribusiness and Department of Horticulture and Landscape Gardening. Each department is rich with dedicated staff and academic aids. All of these are the specialization areas the student may be placed in to depending on his/her performance during first and second years of common courses. Special courses begin from 3rd year onwards. The duration of the course is 4 years, this includes a Research project followed by a presentation in the university symposium and research paper publication plus a 6-month in plant training where the student will conduct a second presentation and submit his final report prior to finalizing his course of study.Department of Biotechnology offers an advanced and highly updated course on all aspects of Biotechnology, course is bundled with extensive field visits to various research stations and private sector organizations. Most of the course content being offered are of the Masters level. It is the only undergraduate level Biotechnology specialization course offered by a Sri Lankan University. The first Head of the Department was present Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management, Prof. Attanayake DPSTG, who had extensive research experience at Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka.Department of Plantation Management recently launched an External Degree Course in Plantation Management for the professionals already established in the field and anyone interested in pursuing opportunities in the same. This course is being conducted during weekends.The cropping area of the agriculture faculty is a facility for students to carry out practical agriculture related studies on various crops and their management. The university is headquartered at Kuliyapitiya circled by Technical College of Kuliyapitiya, National/Central College of Kuliyapitiya and the Bus Depot. Initially Kuliyapitiya premises of the University was few acres but later more lands were purchased and the accommodation facilities were established on these newly acquired lands. Other two faculties,Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Business studies and finance, have been established here.Faculty of Business studies and finance also offering an MBA course open for outsiders.The four faculties are summarized below;
