Minamoto no Yoritomo , who was to becomeshogun less than a decade later, was commander of theMinamoto forces. In this, his first attempt to challenge theTaira , he was assisted by warriors from theMiura clan .Yoritomo had been exiled by
Taira no Kiyomori following theHeiji Rebellion . When Kiyomori heard that Yoritomo had leftIzu and was heading for theHakone Pass, he appointedOba Kagechika to stop him. And he succeeded, with a surprise attack in the night.The battle was fought outside of Yoritomo's headquarters, the city of Kamakura, and was one of the bloodier battles in the
