Pancho Pepe Jazz Band is a Jazz fusion band from Lima, Peru. They play a mix of Jazz, Blues, Afro-Peruvian, Música criolla, Bossa Nova, Reggae, Funk and Rock. Formed in 2005 by students from Los Reyes Rojos, Arte para Crecer and Markham College

History

December 27, 2005; Francisco José Florindez (Pancho Pepe), Camilo Ángeles and Fabian Acosta were eating Ice-Cream and talking about how quality of music was going down. Camilo and Francisco started talking about their severall attempts to form a Jazz Fusion group. Hours later they had a group and some ideas for song that only needed some more work. One week later Francisco and Camilo got together and finished 3 songs: Latin Salsa, Malecon Grau and Beautiful love. The next step was to gather musicians to play; they called Andrei Marambio, Ben Berrondo (drums), Jose Carlos Esteves (keyboards) , Fabian Acosta (percussion), Maria Belén Bueno (guitar, percussion) and Eloy Neyra.

They rehearsed until May 2006, when, for different reasons Ben Berrondo, Jose Carlos Esteves, Fabian Acosta and Eloy Neyra decided to leave the band. The band was in Stand By for around a month until Ignacio Pasos (who knew the band from a local music school called "Arte para Crecer"), José Dammert and Alonso Garrido (both knew Francisco José from Markham College) joined in. Later, for certain motives Maria Belén Bueno and Ignacio Pasos left the band for Julio Gabriel Pereyra and Lorenzo Susti to come in.

From that moment until now the band's been creating music, defining their own style, changing their name several times (Tempus Fugit, Pepejotabé), rehearsing in different places (MaleconGrau Records (Francisco's house), Karma Studio (where microphones talk), Alonso's house (where you have to play without shoes, hence you get electric shocks from the guitar and bass) and finally "Arte para Crecer"). Their style and work has become more complex and elaborated, using odd time-signatures and polyrhythms. The band special touch comes in the 20 minutes solos by each of the members. Sometime they can last up to 30 minutes depending on how each member is feeling to improvise an endless solo.

Success

Their first concert was on the 5th of June in "La Estación de Barranco", in Lima's cultural district: Barranco. The concert was a total success (360 persons approx.) and the band is hoping to gain recognition in Lima's bohemian local scene. They've been already offered 5 more shows, 4 in "La Estación" and 1 Live Recording in San Isidro. The official recording session has been scheduled for August.

Their music will beguin playing in the local jazz radio stations (TeleStereo, Stereo100) in July.

Musical style

Apart from using traditional Jazz Instruments, the band uses several percussion instruments such as the Peruvian Cajón, Timbales, Quijada, Brazillian Tamborim, Tumbas, Cajita, Bongos, cowbell, Güiros and even Didgeridoos
