Jose Barreiro (born 1948,
Taino Nation) is a writer,Cuba n native, journalist and professor of Native American Studies atCornell University . Barreiro was an early editor and contributor at "Akwesasne Notes" (1976-1984), during the years of Seneca luminary,John Mohawk . Barreiro was founding editor of "Native Americas" (1995-2002) and Senior editor of "Indian Country Today". His first novel, published in 1993, was called "The Indian Chronicles", and is a pseudo-journal of the life of Diego Colon, a 12-year-old Taino thatChristopher Columbus brings back with him to Spain in 1493, and who later returns to the Americas where he supports the Taino resistance led by Guarocuya. A recent book, "American is Indian Country", canvasses issues and personalities in Indian Country. Dr. Barreiro is currently Assistant Director for Research, SmithsonianNational Museum of the American Indian .References
