Susie Ibarra (b. Anaheim,
California ,November 15 ,1970 ) is an Americanpercussionist andcomposer ofjazz ,opera , experimental, andavant-garde music . She is probably best known for her work as a jazzdrummer , and is noted for her dynamic range and expressive technique, as well as her incorporation of diverse styles and influences, such asblues ,gamelan , andkulintang .A
Filipino American , Ibarra was born inAnaheim, California , and was raised in Seabrook, nearHouston, Texas . She learned to play piano as a child, and played drums for apunk rock band while in high school. While atSarah Lawrence College in the late 1980s, Ibarra attended aSun Ra performance which she has credited with kindling her interest in jazz. She also attended theMannes College of Music , andGoddard College , where she received herB.A. Ibarra has lived in New York since 1989.She has performed with, among others, the
David S. Ware Quartet, theMatthew Shipp Trio,William Parker ,Assif Tsahar (her ex-husband),John Zorn ,Pauline Oliveros ,Derek Bailey ,Wadada Leo Smith ,Yo La Tengo , andThurston Moore . In 1999, she began recording as a bandleader, and she continues to collaborate with other musicians performing in a variety of genres. Ibarra's current collaborations include the Susie Ibarra Trio withJennifer Choi andCraig Taborn , Electric Kulintang with her husband Roberto Rodriguez, Mephista withSylvie Courvoisier andIkue Mori , Mundo Ninos, and theMark Dresser and Susie Ibarra Duo.Awards and accolades
