Wagaman Reference Lines

Wagaman Reference Lines

The term Wagaman Reference Lines was first used by Texas A&M University Graduate Student John Wagaman when describing the lines on a boxplot that often appear at the end of the whiskers, on the opposite end of the box. The Wagaman Reference Lines, when they appear, run perpendicular to the whiskers and parallel to the lines marking the first, second and third quartiles. The Wagaman Reference Lines (and the ends of the whiskers) mark the minimum and maximum values of a dataset, when there are no outliers. When a dataset contains outlying observations, the Wagaman Reference Lines usually mark the smallest and/or largest observations that are not considered outliers.
