The Olympic Boycott Games (titled the Liberty Bell Classic) was an event held at the
University of Pennsylvania inPhiladelphia in1980 by 29 of the boycotting countries of theAmerican-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics as an alternative to the1980 Summer Olympics inMoscow . Participating nations included theUnited States ,Canada , thePeople's Republic of China ,Egypt ,Thailand ,West Germany ,Sudan andKenya . It began onJuly 16 , shortly before the1980 Summer Olympics opened onJuly 19 . In several events, the times were better than those in Moscow, such as AmericanRenaldo Nehemiah 's time of 13.31 in the110m hurdles ahead of East German gold medal winnerThomas Munkelt 's time of 13.39.
