- X11vnc
In
computing , x11vnc is a program to allow remote access to an existing X server session viaVirtual Network Computing (VNC) (for introduction and concepts see that article). It works by continuously polling the X server'sframe buffer for changes. This allows the user to control theirLinux desktop (KDE ,GNOME ,XFCE , etc) from a remote computer either on the user's own network, or from over the internet as if the user were sitting in front of it.x11vnc does not create an extra display (or X desktop) for remote control. Instead, it uses the existing display shown on the monitor of your
Linux computer in real time. x11vnc has security features that allows the user to set an access password.x11vnc is part of the LibVNCServer project and is
free software available under theGNU General Public License .x11vnc was written by Karl Runge, from frustration with x0rfbserver, an older application of similar functionality but lesser portability.
There are many programs of similar functionality which are usually called "VNC servers". Other examples include:
* "x4vnc" module fromXFree86 version 4
* "x0vncserver" fromRealVNC
*gemsvnc [http://www.elilabs.com/~rj/gemsvnc/]
* "Remote Desktop Sharing" functionality inKDE
* "Desktop Sharing" (Vino VNC server) functionality inGNOME See also
