McGill University School of Architecture

The School of Architecture is a constituent school of the McGill University, McGill University Faculty of Engineering in Montreal, Canada, offering accredited professional undergraduate and graduate degrees and post-professional graduate degrees in architecture.

The School was established in 1896, and is housed in the Macdonald-Harrington building at the downtown McGill campus. The Macdonald-Harrington formerly housed the biology and chemistry departments.

The School offers professional programs, including B.Sc. (Arch.) and M.Arch. (Professional), and post-professional research programs, including M.Arch. (Post-professional), Graduate Diploma, and Ph.D.

The curriculum emphasizes freehand drawing with four 'Freehand Drawing' classes and two in the field 'Sketching school' classes

Affordable Homes

The Affordable Homes program is taught by Avi Friedman. Its mandate is to explore new and innovative approaches to North American housing design.

Architectural History and Theory

The History and Theory program, founded, directed and taught by Saidye Rosner Bronfman Professor Alberto Pérez-Gómez will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2007 with the Reconciling Poetics and Ethics in Architecture Conference.

Domestic Environments

The Domestic Environments is the newest program at the School of Architecture. It is under the supervision of Annmarie Adams and explores the role of living space as a shaper and container of social interaction through interdisciplinary, primary-source research.

Minimum Cost Housing

The Minimum Cost Housing was founded with the assistance of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in 1971, and it is one of the oldest and most enduring programs of its kind in the world. The primary objective of the program is to return graduates to their architectural careers with an enhanced intellectual base and the ability to think about housing in a rigorous and imaginative way.
