December 6 ,1831 –October 7 ,1892 ) was a nineteenth century politician, lawyer and judge fromIowa .Born in
Huron County, Ohio , Sampson moved toKeokuk County, Iowa in 1843 where he attended public schools as a child. He later attended Howe’s Academy and Knox College, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1856, commencing practice inSigourney, Iowa . He was prosecuting attorney ofKeokuk County, Iowa from 1856 to 1858. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Sampson enlisted in theUnion Army as acaptain in the5th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment in 1861 and was later promoted tolieutenant colonel of the same regiment, serving as so until he was mustered out of service in 1864. Afterwards, he resumed practicing law inSigourney, Iowa , was a member of theIowa Senate in 1866 and was judge of the sixth district ofIowa from 1867 to 1875. Sampson was elected a Republican to theUnited States House of Representatives in 1874, serving from 1875 to 1879, being unsuccessful for reelection in 1878. He resumed practicing law until his death inSigourney, Iowa onOctober 7 ,1892 . He was interned in West Cemetery in Sigourney.External links
