Franciszek Trąbalski (October 10, 1870 - July 26 1964) was a Polish socialist politician and a longtime member of Polish Socialist Party (PPS).

Biography

During his long involvement in the public service he was leader of Polish socialist movement in Germany, member of Sejm, Senior Sejm Marshal and, for one day, Head of the Polish State as President of the State National Council.

Trąbalski was born in Czempiń in Silesia (then part of the Kingdom of Prussia, later German Empire, Weimar Republic and Third Reich and, from 1945, Poland).

In 1893 he became a leader of Polish socialists in Liepzig. The same year he joined PPS. From 1906 to 1909 he was a secretary within party leadership in Prussian part of Poland.

He fought in the Silesian Uprising, when part of Silesia was incorporated into Poland after its independence was reestablished.

From 1922 to 1939 Trąbalski served as a leader of all Polish socialists in Germany. In addition (1922-1937) he was a chief editor of "Głosu Ludu" (the voice of people) and "Związkowca".

After World War II he became a leader of PPS in Silesia, and from 1945 to 1948 he was member of the party leadership.

From 1947 to 1952 he was Sejm Member and served at the beginning as Senior Marshal (as oldest MP).

Because of this, for one day (February 4, 1947) he served as temporary President of the State National Council (head of state at this time).

After PPS and PPR (Soviet-backed, communist party) were united, he became a member of the new Polish United Workers' Party.
