Shimose powder was a type of
gunpowder developed by the Japanese chemistShimose Masachika (1860-1911). The powder was used by theImperial Japanese Navy from 1893, and has played an important role in the Japanese victory in the 1905Russo-Japanese War [cite web | title=Shimose, Masachika | url=http://www.ndl.go.jp/portrait/e/datas/109.html?c=9 | publisher=National Diet Library, Japan | accessdate=2008-10-01] . The Shimose powder formulation was derived from that of thesmokeless powder developed by the French inventor Paul Vielle in 1884.The powder brought great precision to Japanese gunnery:
