Career
Morecambe
Carlton started his career with Morecambe, where he came through the through the youth ranks. He spent six years with Morcambe, making 180 appearances and scoring 59 goals. Carlton Scored the winning goal for 'The Shrimps' in the 2007 Conference National play-off Final, which saw Morecambe promoted into The Football League with a 2–1 win over Exeter City. Danny Carlton has rejoined Morecambe until the end of the season 2010–11.
Carlisle United
In the summer of 2007, Carlton signed for Carlisle United for a nominal fee. In his first season, Carlton was mainly used as substitute. In total he made 46 appearances for the Cumbrians and scored 3 goals. All of his goals were scored at the beginning of the 2008–09 season, where on 9 August, he fired Carlisle to a 3–2 opening day victory away at Bristol Rovers, bagging a brace. In the summer of 2009, Carlton was released from Carlisle United.
Bury
On 1 July 2009, he signed for Bury and wore the number 9 shirt for the 2009–10 season. On Thursday 23 September he joined Grimsby Town on an initial one month loan where he played 5 games for The Mariners before returning to Bury on 20 October 2010. He cancelled his contract by mutual consent with Bury on 31 January 2011.
Return to Morecambe
Carlton re-signed for Morecambe on a short term deal in 2011. then on 1 July he signed a deal for Morecambe a two year deal after impressing before the end of the season On 9 August 2011 he scored the first goal in the 2–0 win over Barnsley. On 10 September 2011 he scored a hat-trick in the 6–0 win over Crawley Town.
