Gaines-Burgers

Gaines-Burgers

Gaines-Burgers was a brand of dog food introduced in 1961 by General Foods and produced through the 1990s. The product was noteworthy in that it consisted of individually-wrapped hamburger-like patties of soft, moisturized dog food which could be stored indefinitely at room temperature. At the time, "soft moist" food products were relatively new. The technology used to produce Gaines-Burgers was adapted and refined for human food products during the 1960s and 1970s. In November 1982 General Foods introduced "Improved Gaines-Burgers Cheese", advertised as made with cheddar cheese.

Gaines-Burgers were named after the former Gaines Food Company of Sherburne, New York, a major pet food company acquired by General Foods in 1943.
