USS "LST-998" was an "LST-542"-class
tank landing ship in theUnited States Navy . Like many of her class, she was not named and is properly referred to by her hull designation."LST-998" was laid down on
8 April 1944 at theBoston Navy Yard ; launched on14 May 1944 , sponsored by Miss Olga M. Lessa; and commissioned on29 May 1944 , with Lt. R. W. Barter, USNR, in command."LST-998" apparently did not see combat service during
World War II .Following World War II, "LST-998" performed occupation duty in the Far East and saw service in
China until late March 1946. She returned to theUnited States and was decommissioned on26 June 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 31 July that same year. On4 November 1947 , the ship was sold to the Northwest Merchandising Service, renamed "Don Ernesto" and entered service inArgentina [Friedman, p. 574]In Argentine service, "Don Ernesto" was redesignated BDT-3 (Buque Desembarco de Tanques), and was named ARA "Cabo San Francisco de Paula". She was retired in
